    high memory usage

first off im new to posting on here and id like to say hello to everyone :)

lately ive been getting weird spikes on my computer, not on the internet but just my computer itself seems slow. it seems that my physical memory is always around 50% - 60% but my cpu is 0%. i also noticed that its running 60-70 processes, not at startup, but when im just at average computer use. i took a screen shot of my task manager and my resource manager:

    http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2646/92413957.png

i also have hijackthis if needed. i was concerned about such high use of the "hardware reserved", 2089mb...seems high to me? ive seen other posts on here with half of that and my friend has 3mb hardware reserved. sorry for the wall of text and thanks for help in advance.

Welcome to Seven Forums tsoaf. Those numbers don't seem bad, it's just all relative to how much memory you have. See my numbers, but I have twice as much memory.

    high memory usage-memory.jpg

I have 63 processes running. I think 2 gig memory is the minimum these days, but as long as you aren't running out of memory when you are doing tasks, you are ok. memory is there to be used, and based on the comparison, I don't think your usage is high, but more that you could use another 2 gigs :)

    A Guy

    Edit:

Hmmm, just looked at your pic again, and it seems to say you have 4gig, but only 2 are available? If you fill in your system specs, we can dig deeper. Let us know how much memory is installed, it may be that only half is being used?

Seems odd to have 2GB of memory hardware-reserved, but basically 50% of your installed RAM is available for use at the time of your screenshot, so that's pretty good (about normal for a Win7 machine under relatively moderate usage). Unless you already know the reason for it, it would at least be worth investigating why you are losing half of your RAM to hardware reservation.

hey so i checked my current ram to see how much i had installed and it showed 4gig but (1.96 in use). so i turned off my computer and took out a stick of ram, restarted, 2.00 gigs showed up. tried the other stick by itself also and it showed 2.00 also. so i tried them both together again dual channel, the same way i had it before..it gave me some crazy beeps as if i installed it wrong, then restarted by itself and it worked properly? does this mean that the mother board could be dying, i have no idea.

haha so i dont know what happened exactly but that was the problem and its working now back at 4.00 and feels much smoother like it used to. here is a screen shot:

    http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/3240/fixedw.png

not sure if its necessary now but as for specs i have a i5 750, gigabyte ga-h55-usb3, ripjaws 12800, super old hd

i have another question, on my hijackthis log..does everything look normal? i remember reading somewhere that the "(file missing)" is that hijackthis isnt compatible with 64 and shows up that way.

I'd run Memtest and see if it runs without any errors:

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

It may be that one of your dimms wasn't seated right. Hopefully it isn't a sign of a failing slot. Time will tell. Good you are back to normal as of now. As far as the Hijackthis log, I'm not an expert, so really can't say. You do haven the latest version which is W7 and x64 compatible.

It can be done from a USB, but as you'll see, it's complicated. The easiest is download the iso and burn it to a cd, then boot from the cd and run the test. A Guy

i feel so noob right now...i restarted 4 times trying to get this to work, burned the .iso onto a cd after unzipping it. checked it in the cd rom to make sure it read it and it did. so i restarted but nothing happened, i restarted it again and went to bios and put cdrom as first read or whatever its called with hard drive second. still didnt work, so i tried my other cd rom, which it still didnt read the cd. while the computer is on it reads it fine but only as "view folder"

*cough* Windows 7 have a memory diagnostics built in...Just search for "memory" in the start menu. No messing with CDs or anything of that stuff...

hey so i stopped messing with the memtest because its annoying me and didnt get it working right. i did the memory diagnostics tool through windows and it showed no errors after the start up. for some reason now, before its never shown up but after running the test it is, i have the action center flag in my tool bar thing saying that i had a device error or driver error on 12-24-10. might have been my brother using my computer because i would have remembered it. this is what its telling me:

Stop (blue screen) error caused by a device or driver

You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a stop error, also called a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.

is there anything i should do? or now that its running correctly im ok? thanks for all your help guys.

edit: i also just realized that my last windows update was on 12-24-10. not sure if that has something to do with the problem or not but coincidence maybe?
