Windows 7 Pro "stuck" in Windows update process ?

My Win 7 Pro 32bit system was restarted due to a screen lockup. Apparently there was also a Windows update pending which had not started yet.

My screen has been "stuck" with the normal update closing screen saying:

"Please do not power off or unplug your machine"
"Installing update 1 of 1 .."

This has been going on now for over 45 minutes...with the little Windows circle turning...but nothing else is happening ?

Can I shut off power or reboot...or is there a better way to get the system update "unstuck" without damaging anything ?

Thanks...Tim
