    CPU Temperature "Jump"

Hey guys. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

So I'm playing a game (Bioshock) on my new rig. I kept up HWMonitor just to check what the temperatures were after playing.

After 20-30 minutes of playing, I closed it down. The CPU temps were hovering around 50-55 Celsius. However, my max temp column read around 70 for one of the cores, and 80 for another. I got no warning messages, the machine was and still is running fine, and the temps have since cooled down to their normal 25-35* range, depending on the core and what I'm doing.

I shut down the machine, and checked it. There are no wires or anything that would obstruct airflow anywhere near the CPU. I upped the fan speed on my two fans to medium (They were on low).

Should I be concerned about the temperature jump, or is that fine, as long as the temperatures stay around 50*?

Well, if it's hovering around 50 degrees on idle, or after playing a game, that's fine, although a little high for idle
70-80 degrees is not a good temp while you are running something. are you using the stock cooler? also, when you turned your case fans up, did you try this again?
EDIT: Thought I might add, 70 degrees is really the highest temp you want to see your cpu at.

I am using the stock cooler. Should I consider an upgraded one?

No, I didn't try it again. I will soon, and post what happens.

Again, I'm pretty sure it didn't stay there for long. I just happened to notice that the max temp was that high. I checked the temps IMMEDIATELY after closing the game, and they were 50-55 across the 4 cores. Within a few minutes they were back down to 30.

well, I think that you might want to invest in a better cooler, although testing it again would be a good idea.
You don't have anything overclocked, right?

The motherboard came pre-overclocked by a little bit. I can't seem to find the exact amount.

    Newegg.com - MSI H55-GD65 LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI ATX Intel Motherboard

This is my board. I haven't overclocked it at all.

What do you mean by "pre-overclocked?" This board doesn't say anything about it coming overclocked. The only thing I saw was that it has a spectacular overclocking ability.

Well, To get back to the original issue, I think your CPU heatsink is not dissipating enough heat while under load, but why 70-80 max puzzles me. You really should test out Bioshock again, and if it lists a max of 70-80, you should probably invest in an aftermarket cooler. Preferably one with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)

Hmm. Upping the fan speed seemed to do the trick. After about 10 minutes, it still never got above 64. I also cleaned up the wiring job a bit, so that could also have helped. Average temp while playing was down a few degrees, as well.

I'll definitely invest in a better CPU cooling system. I just wanted to make sure that nothing catastrophic was going to happen.

    Thanks!
