Windows 7: Can't modify indexing options

Can't modify indexing options

When I open the indexing options in control panel, it does not list anything - says its "waiting to receive indexing status".
I located a "search" file in my directory with subfile "indexed locations" that lists literally everything on my computer including emails. Normally when I want to search for something on my hard drive I would not want emails to be included in the search. I also found "sticky notes" in that same subfile - is that where they belong??

I'd like to modify my search indexing but I can't get into the list of locations. Suggestions??

I don't think I ever found a solution but I have since gotten rid of McAfee, which I believe caused multiple problems with locking me out of files. I have also performed a clean install so I no longer have the issue. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

I had posted bacause, although I had the same problem and the MS troubleshooter did not fix the problem, I did solve the problem on my system.

I went control panel | Indexing Options | Advanced button | Rebuild button

I did not use the computer until the "rebuild" was finished.

The rebuild did not have the folders selected which I needed, so I selected folders on the C drive and let it rebuild. This time I used the computer but did no operations on files being indexed. Next I did the same for my D drive.

I do not know whether relocation of many folders had messed up the indexer or not. This time I made sure that nothing was moved, deleted, copied while the indexing was taking place.
