Try Disk Defrag - Fast and Safe Defragmenter for Your Disks it's free and I use it to defrag my disks.

Do you have the proper chipset drivers loaded for your motherboard and/or the USB ports?

Day 2, and I've spotted in device manager that two of my PCI to USB host controllers have a yellow triangle beside them! Should I unistall these 2 and reboot?

That would be the best bet. Also what make is your motherboard?

You can use CPUZ to determine your make/model

If that doesn't work you might want to try the following...

    nVidia nForce 780a

    32Bit
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL

    64Bit
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL
