Hibernate Simply locks computer and shuts off Monitor

I have had this HP dv 2045dx with windows 7 premium home edition for a little less than a year now and since I've had I have not been able to hibernate.

I have gone through every tutorial about typing in the correct command to enable hibernation and after I did all of this hiberfil.sys exists and the registry says hibernation is enabled however I still recieve the same behavior. I belive I have tracked the problem to a registry key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Power


I've loooked at this key for win 2000 and some other places on the internet and they say there is supposed to be a heuristics value which is not there.

They also seem to have non-zero values for HiberCompressTime, HiberCopyBytes, HiberCopyTime, ...etc. All of which for me is zero.

I have checked and made sure none of my devices are keeping the computer running through Device Manager

I have disabled the ability for programs to keep my system running in the registry.

I have changed the power settings to what I thought might work then back to the default many times.

All of these fixes still result in the same behavior of my computer locking and turning off the monitor but not hibernating.

Hibernate is probably one of my fav things and I miss it terribly. could anyone offer any advice as to how to get it fixed.

I did not restart my computer after I changed which partition was active.


I am dual booting with ubuntu but the boot loader is in ubuntu not win 7. I am afraid to restart with the system partition marked as active just in case this stops me from booting through ubuntu.


Will this be a problem? should I change the system partion to active even though this does not change the hibernation behavior?

Step three seems the most useful to me however I looked everywhere in my BIOS and there is no "Power Management" section.


despite this powercfg -a returns

<S3> ; hibernate; and hybrid sleep are available but

<S1> ; <S2> are not available

So my friend has the exact same computer running windows 7 as well so I looked at his power registry key and it was different so I exported it from his and imported it to mine. Now all it does is lock the computer without turning the monitor off.


His computer does hibernate once I enabled it.


also this locking instead of hibernating behavior was occurring before the dual boot was set up.

I was hopeful win 7 SP1 would fix the prob but that didn't work either.

so this is interesting. I just got a BSOD after installing the hotfix and it said that there was an issue with NTFS.sys. I'm thinking I might have hurt the system partition during the dual boot setup. I'm going to try a repair install of windows 7 and see if that fixes the problem.

I went through this verifyer: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

it didn't find anything

I also replaced powerprof.dll and ntfs.sys from my recovery disk using 7zip to no avail as well
