Dell Laptop no longer sleeps when lid is closed

This is similar to the issue in this thread.
Laptop doesn't sleep when lid is closed

I have a Dell laptop that always went to sleep reliably when I closed the lid. Now it does not. I am able to get the laptop to sleep with the Start --> Sleep option but not with the lid closing and not with the power button.

On the power options interface screen, in the section that says "Power Buttons and Lid" there is no way to set a lid action - there is no choice or link available. It's like someone completely removed the computer's knowledge that it has a lid - maybe it somehow got tricked into thinking it was a desktop?

Thanks in advance for your help - I appreciate it!

Windows 7 Professional x64 running...

Now that I'm thinking about it, it may be in some "desktop" mode instead of a laptop mode. Here are other data points:
- It no longer shows the battery indicator in the lower right status bar
- The power options no longer show different options for when the system is "plugged in" vs "on battery power", it's just one setting.
- No more "lid" settings as I said above.

Hmmm - does anyone know how to check this or what a possible fix might be?

Hi, welcome to the forums

You may want to set all plans to their default settings...

1, Open up Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
2, Click a plan then click Change plan settings

3, Click Restore default settings for this plan

4, Repeat for each plan

What's the model number?
Check your BIOS to see if the power scheme is S3.

I checked the BIOS menu by pressing F12 at startup. I looked at all of the settings and I could not find anything that gave any "power scheme" or "power mode" or anything like that.

Where should I look to see if the power scheme is S3?

You may have some processes running that are keeping the Laptop from sleeping.
Have you installed any new programs recently?
Do you have Avira installed?

the laptop is sleeping fine when I go to start --> sleep

it just doesn't recognize the closing of the lid as an event. it also doesn't recognize the pushing of the power button as an event.

I do not have Avira installed (don't know what it is)

I did have a malware issue that was cleaned and I think it "cleaned" me right out of being a laptop!

Thanks for the tip but my problem is I DO NOT HAVE SEPARATE SETTINGS for "on battery" and "plugged in"!

The computer seems to no longer know it's a laptop. That's what I'm trying to fix...
