Unable to rename Disk Label of an External HDD

Okay, I have a 150GB FAT32 External Hard Disk. It shows up as 'Local Disk (J:)' in My Computer. I right-clicked it, and renamed it to 'T4 (J:)' but it still shows up as 'Local Disk (J:)'! I tried various names but still it shows up as 'Local Disk (J:)' in My Computer.

So I went to 'Disk Management' to try and change the label from there and, what do you know, Disk Partition (J:) shows 'T4 (J:)' !!!

So, what I want to know is, why isn't the label showing up properly in My Computer when it is correct in 'Disk Management'??

    Hoping for a quick reply,
    T4

See this tut. Option 1 would be most relevant I think.

    Drive - Rename

You may want to try it using the following process...

1, Open Computer, right-click the drive & select Properties

Unable to rename Disk Label of an External HDD-disk-properties.png

2, Type what you wish to call it in the box, click OK and accept any UAC prompts

Unable to rename Disk Label of an External HDD-uac-prompt.png

Unable to rename Disk Label of an External HDD-computer.png

It could be that the standard rename might not be getting full administrative rights

Hey, it turns out that this could be an 'autorun.inf' error. I think that the 'autorun.inf' of my HDD has a parameter like 'label=Local Disk' or something similar.

But now, the problem is that I can't access 'autorun.inf' at all. No rename, no delete, no edit. I tried changing it's attributes from an elevated command prompt but still no luck. No matter what I try, in the end I get an 'Access is Denied' error.

    Soooooo......any ideas?

    You could try

    Command Prompt at Startup

and see if it'll allow you to delete the file from there

Have you checked any ownership issues. A tutorial on taking ownership -
    Take Ownership Shortcut

    Also you can't have a partition >32G for Fat32. Your HDD is 150GB !
Convert a hard disk or partition to FAT32 format

Perhaps since you have formatted the HDD and that didn't work, you should try a wipe, clean all to secure erase the entire HDD, have a look at step #7 in this tutorial at the link below.
