    Slow startup

I built my computer a few months ago and for about a month the startup was fast (20-40secs) but now it seems to have got much much slower on start up (2mins 20 secs). I have not recently installed new software i have preformed defrag, disc cleanup, virus scans, malware scans and i have even re-installed windows itself.

I did find that going through advanced options from start up (F8) and going on "last known configuration" helped and when i do that it speeds start up by 30secs-1minute but my whole family struggle to come to senses with pressing more than just the on button. I also do not want to have do do this all the time though as it is, by far, not a solution.

    Please help

Is it slow to the "welcome" message or slow to the desktop after it? Go here and download the performance tools for Windows 7: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/performance/cc825801 And then follow this procedure: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff190998

It should show you what's taking the most time during restart.

If computer is starting slow, then check startup items. Start->Run->msconfig in startup tab.

It is when it has come up with "starting windows" but before the animation. Plus what am I looking for in startup/boot in msconfig? I have already stopped somethings from starting

Your PC will start with EVERYTHING in that msconfig startup tab unchecked, but you should leave your anti-virus checked.

    See if that helps.

Then add back other items one at a time, rebooting after each addition, to find out which one is slowing you down.

Check Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools -- Windows 7 will automatically flag whats slowing your boot up down even without the performance tools I mentioned. They were kindof overkill anyway....

Just registered with this forum to reply to this question.
Got my new Asus with Win 7(64-bit) about a year ago and have been following this forum since, and it has been very helpful to me. Thanks!

My machine had started quickly, about a minute from 'off', for almost a year, until some updating that occurred shortly after SP1, which went smoothly for me. Since, it has taken it about 2 or 2&1/2 minutes to boot to the desktop.
No startup programs had been added, so clearly some system service had been altered, i assume through updating.
After reading for a while i downloaded and installed TuneUp Utilities 2011 and let it run its optimization of my system.
My system startup from 'off', and even my shutdown, are now back to nearly the times they were originally at. I am aware several veterans on this forum recommend against second-party optimization utilities being used with Win 7, so i offer my experience with caution- but this is my experience.
I am very satisfied with this particular tuneup utility.

SuprX's suggestion has worked.... but it has only managed to speed my start up by 15 seconds and i still think that it is not great.

    Any other ideas?

    Yes!
Be sure to use TuneUp Utilities in 'Turbo Mode', if you are not doing so already, as this was what really made a big difference in my reboot time. The application will optimize your service priorities, giving higher priority where needed, decreasing it where Windows is wasting your time- i am amazed by how well it works.
