Help I can't open folders!!

For some odd reason, I cannot open files. I double-click them and a message comes up (below). I even checked the folder options and it is set to double-click folders to open. The only way for me to open folders is to right-click and click open, but that's long.

Could anyone tell me how I can sort out my problem? I've tried system restore but that doesn't seem to work either, it corrupts my system so I undo sys restore.

This is almost always the result of a virus on your system, as soon as you get them opening again you need to immediately run a deep scan.

Meanwhile look here

Thanks that worked. Originally what happened is that my system installed windows 7 SP1 and all of a sudden this started happening. Then I removed it. System was still messed up and your thing fixed my problem. And I guess I'll do my virus scan now just in case one sneaked by MSE.

Ah so it was a failed sp1 installation, I suppose that could do it too.
A lot of things are changed during that upgrade so if it didn't go right I suppose that could have been the source of your issue.

Hello. After hours of struggle I finally found the solution for this. it's a little bit late, but since I was unable to find a solution on any forum, here's mine:

1. open "run" and type "services.msc". Enter.
2. search for "themes" service and stop it (from the top)
3. you can now open folders, but the theme sucks.
4. open your theme browser. (from desktop, right click - personnalize)
5. don't choose a theme because the service is stopped. you have to re-activate "themes" service first. But careful to open the theme browser before re-activating it!
6. activate "themes" service from the service list.
7. choose another theme that you know it works without a problem (aero for example)
8. problem solved!

Cannot open Help folders.
The "Help' file in some programs are all .chm files and "Windows cannot open these files" is the inevitable error message. .chm is not listed in the list of file formats accessed from the control panel. Programs affected are Nero 11 and Pinnacle Studio 14. I could use some help with both! I run...

Consolidate Shortcut Folders/File Folders in Open Dialogue
I was wondering if there's a way to sort file folders and shortcut folders so they are listed together, as in previous OS versions. I find it frustrating that 7 has forced the shortcuts to be split up into their own category rather than their file properties. I prefer to sort my folders by type,...
