    (Error Recovery Mode) Login

    Hi

I have had a few problems with malware and after removing it (presumably) and getting Windows Security & Defender up and running again, I keep on getting the (Error Recovery Mode) when at Win login. Novell installed on machine too.

I have tried starting in safe mode/selective startup, resetting password of profile (admin), etc but it keeps starting up at this error recovery mode logon. If I type my username (which would normally be the default), it logs on OK and computer seems normal... just annoying to have this every time I log on.

I have searched a fair bit on the topic, but either missed it, or it does not seem to be too common OR it is something really silly that might not even deserve a forum post...?

    Any advice? More info needed?

Try a startup repair and failing that a sfc scan.

    Hi Bill2

Thanks for the prompt reply! I followed both these steps.

Startup repair said that I have recently connected a USB device/camera to the computer which prevented it from running. Undocked computer and ran again, same problem (no devices connected though).

Ran SFC /scannow no problems found.

    Still get same login message.

I don't have Win7 installation disc - live at a remote research station with no IT support (other than internet)

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks!

makulu, if you do have a camera driver (or another usb driver) installed (not the default usb drivers), try uninstalling it from Programs & Features.

If that doesnt help, try a clean boot procedure.

Bill2, uninstalled all camera drivers & related software from Programs & Features - no luck. Disabled all USB (non default) - no luck. Tried clean boot as per instructions, no luck. Checked processes after clean boot and disabled/uninstalled some (eg GoogleUpdate). no luck in getting Startup Repair to run.

Any other ideas that I can try?

Thanks for all the advice so far!

Ok, why dont you run a malware scan again? Download free malwarebytes, scan and let it clean whatever it wants to. Also, click on Start orb, type MSCONFIG, click startup tab and uncheck anything that seems strange (although I think you might already have done that), reboot.

Other than the only thing I can think of is to try fixing the user profile.

If that doesnt help too, you would need to do a repair install.

    Hi Bill2
Ran malwarebytes & Defender again - nothing picked up. did reboot with as little as possible services & even disabled (even some win services) a large nr of non-essential drivers. no luck

Created other admin profiles as per instructions and although I have not had time to copy files from old to new user folders, still same error recovery mode logon screen regardless of last login profile...

Also need to get Win7(SP1) install disk to run repair - my location rather remote, so might take few days to get. Any online options? Not sure if I understand this part of Repair Install instructions correctly:
You can use a Windows 7 SP1 installation disc (ex: Technet (available), MSDN (available), or retail (when available)) to do a repair install with on a currently installed slipstream Windows 7 SP1.

Thanks a lot for the help so far! Much appreciated!

    Did you get this resolved?

I am experiencing the identical issue... Tried installing SP1 over the existing install figuring it would fix any file issues within Windows itself...
