    High ram usage?

    I got windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
And it uses about 1.4 GB / 18% of my physical memory @ fresh boot.

    My total memory is 8GB.

Just wondering how this can be.

My other pc is windows 7 ultimate 32 bit with 2 GB Memory which uses 20-25% ram at boot. which would translate around 400-500 mb ish.

Both are practically fresh installs and no other background services running.

So why does my other pc use up 3x as much ram lol.

There is nothing high here. Windows 7 need RAM memory. I have 2GB of RAM,and when computer is booted I got 25% usage. It's not high,it's normal. There is nothing to worry about that.

First off 32-bit uses far less ram than 64-bit for just about everything, as 32-bit Windows can only have a maximum of 3.5gb usable RAM so they designed it slightly differently. Second of all, Windows 7 will use the RAM the system has if it finds it can use it in various ways, it's by design.

It uses less RAM because it's doing less (no WOW64 subsystem, smaller kernel with no protection code running compared to x64, etc), because 32bit data structures are (sometimes far) smaller than 64bit data structures, and 32bit binaries themselves tend to be smaller than their x64 counterparts when loaded, amongst other things. It really does not have anything to do with addressable RAM, and a 32bit processor can access 4GB of RAM no problem - you only see 3.2 - 3.5GB of RAM on most systems because the BIOS has reserved RAM and reports the memory as unusable, or reports the 4GB memory address and has moved some of the memory above that 4GB boundary to reserve it (and in this latter instance an x64 OS will see the additional memory as useable, whereas a 32bit OS will not - in the former instance, where the memory is actually locked and blocked by the BIOS for use by hardware, neither an x86 or x64 OS will report the additional reserved memory as available).

To get a good idea of what your ram is doing. Press the Windows key and R. Type in resmon and go to memory and look at the colored bar. Notice the Standby and Free ram. They are kind of like a 2nd string quarter back with the clip board. They just sit their until they are needed by the system. When needed they through the clip board down and get in and play. Windows 7 also saves a little for hardware just in case it needs it. Just let Windows 7 handle it. It does a great job.
