My new computer is slowing down

Well, I wasn't going to put a lot of "stuff" on my new computer. I wanted it to be clean and fast. It was for a while, but I've added a lot of games. We like them on the computer and not live. I've downloaded and then removed when we don't like them.

Could this be what is slowing down the response time?

I have programs on here that I don't know if I will need. Media stuff. Is there a software I can download and use to remove old files that are not being used?

Hello Linda.

Don't know what happened, but you appear to have posted the same thread twice. If you click the red triangle at the top-right of the thread, you can let the mods know and they'll delete the thread you're not using.

As for all the stuff on your computer, you're correct in assuming the more you install the more it can impact on your computer's performance.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall a Program and uninstall any program you don't use.

You can also use a third-party uninstaller such as Revo Uninstaller, which can be downloaded here: http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Just download the free version unless you feel inclined to buy Revo Professional. Revo will do a better job of tidying up leftover remnants of uninstalled software.

As well as seavixen's excellent advice, in your Start Menu type msconfig then enter. GoTo the Startup tab and Disable (by unticking) any programs that Auto start with your PC that you don't need to do so. If you need any help or advice on which you can disable take a snip picture of the Startup tabs Window or make a list of them and add to a new post.

I clicked on the red triangle but it only took me to a screen where I could post.

I know about removing programs, but don't know which ones I want to remove.

I can try disabling the start up programs. I thought there is a software that looks for files that haven't ben used in a while and asks if you want to delete them. I'm thinking there may be fragments left over from programs I have already removed.

I downloaded the Revo program. It looks amazing. It also looks like a lot to understand. I don't have much patience for reading directions. I'm going to use it to do some cleanup and I'll post later.

Have you run MalWareBytes (Free Version) to check for any spyware on your computer ?

Be very careful with Revo! ... When I first starting playing around with it on my XP, it took out things that I needed :shock:

Thanks for the warning about Revo. I already deleted things, so we'll see. As far as Malware, I have a program called Windows Defender. It says that I don't have any Spyware. I hope it's dependable. I turned off a few things in the startup. Again, I don't know what all of them are so maybe I could turn off more. I guess it wouldn't hurt as they won't be deleted. This stuff just wearts me out.

Cleaning the registry and defragmenting your hard drive will increase load-up times. You can use the 'Disk Defragmenter' included with Windows, but some people prefer other ones.
I've used CCleaner before, and it's a very handy tool. It can be used to quickly delete temporary internet/windows files, and clean your registry.

Good to hear things are improving for you.

My only suggestion for now is for you to download Windows Defenders "big brother", Microsoft Security Essentials. It's still free, and improves on WD. No need to uninstall/disable WD as MSE will do that for you.

Just go to the Control panel>Install/Uninstall and you can uninstall anything you want. If it's only a file, you can usually just click delete. Be careful that you know what you're deleting.
