Why does Windows 7 insist on making these transfers so slow? I'm transferring 120 gigs from C:\ to E:\ and this stupid machine insists on moving it over at the 'amazing' speed of 693k per second. At this rate it will take two days! Unfortunately it's already in progress and the last time I stopped a transfer I had to reformat the drive before it would recognize it again, so stopping is not an option. Any hints on how to make it faster? It doesn't seem to be using ANY processor or RAM as both are showing to be at idle levels. Why it doesn't think to use 8 gigs of RAM to transfer 7 gigs per second is beyond me.
Because HDDs are slow. Especially when you are moving large amounts of data. THEY ARE SLOW. The limiting factor is not Windows, it is the HDDs. It could use all the RAM it wants it still would be able to transfer those files at "7 gigs per second" the connection to the HDD is not that fast and a HDD cannot read/write that fast either.
Well still it seems that Windows 7 does not utilize the HDD's full capacity, whatever it is, otherwise it would not be possible for any program to do the operation any faster. The interesting thing is that when I first started the transfer it was moving 4.0mb per second. Over time it just steadily declined until it was only moving at 170kb per second. It reminded me of a person setting out to run five miles but stupidly started by sprinting and had to walk the rest of the way. But a computer shouldn't get tired. Any clue why that happened?
HDDs only function at high speeds in short bursts, they do slow down with large transfers. It happens because their cache is filled, writing to the platters cannot keep up with emptying the cache fast enough. Thus the whole thing slows down. When you write a file to the HDD, you do not actually write directly to the HDD, you write to its cache. (The amound of cache is designated on the drive usually as "16 MB cache")
As for the other applications doing it faster... marginally faster we are talking about a few seconds faster. The is because they do not take the precautions that Explorer takes. Explorer works in a transactional state allowing for the job to be canceled, as well as flushing the cache and verifying the files was actually written to disk.
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for explaining it. But that does leave me with one final question. In this day where terabyte hard drives are about to become the new norm (if they haven't already), why hasn't someone found a way to build one that can write gigabytes at a time? After all, the larger a hard drive's capacity the more likely it is someone will need to copy a large part of it.
