For what I paid for this netbook last year, I can get a more powerful 15.6" laptop now....only drawback would be the battery life drop-off. But I can't just go buy another one without selling this one....so I'll probably hang onto this one for another year. It still does what I need it to do just fine.
A nice setup would be a laptop with two drive capability, then you could have the OS on a small SSD and data on a big honkin' one. But would be somewhat spendy.

Two HDD bays are the best configuration for a laptop, I haven't been able to find that setup under a 17", and usually the higher end versions.
My Dell Studio 17" has two bays (SSD and HDD) Dell's only new model with 2 bays is the XPS 17". At least from what I can find. All OEM's don't make the drive bay specs easy to find.
With SSDs becoming more popular dual bay laptops should be showing up in smaller models, though the new 'Thinner is better' trend may prevent this from happening.

In this day of $20 32GB thumbdrives I am waiting for some smart manufacturer to give an option of a swappable 2.5" bay in place of the dvdrom. How many people lug even one disc around when they're going mobile? Even if you needed something disc-based, stash a few disc images on your USB key and you're all set.

That is a good idea, there are some 3rd party conversions for the DVD to hard drive bay for laptops.
I wouldn't mind if they removed DVD players from laptops, they take up too much space for how much they are used these days.
