Windows 7: Sleep and Hibernate actions

Sleep and Hibernate actions

When I use the Sleep or Hibernate buttons it does a restart.

Anyone know why it does this..?

My first guess would be you are running with a pre windows 7 driver on one of your devices.
The vista drivers just love to crash when sent power management commands.

We could probably sort it if you used driver verifier and generated some dump files (it's the easiest way for me to look over your drivers)
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
(Please read all instructions for driver verifier before using as it's possible it will make the machine behave badly and you need to know how to undo it.)

Oh and you may want to check these settings too.
To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header
Select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

Just to make sure it all goes right.

windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Thanx Maguscreed - I have done all as instructed. after a couple of reboots and BSODs I tried the Sleep and the Hibernate and both work ok at this time (we shall see what happens in the future).

You said you would you have been able to tell if I had a bad driver, how? as I can't see any lists of drivers that I could pass to you. where did the dump go? or does 'dump' have a different meaning in computer terminology.

Go to c:\windows\minidump
zip all the files in that folder and upload and attach them here. I will then be able to have a look at what's going on with your drivers.

windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Hope this is what you need -

I have had a couple of bsod's since the reboot but the sleep and hibernate seem to be working ok.

The cause of the crash is a driver named mctkmd64.sys rather confusing entry in the driver database for this one, apparently have no confirmation as to exactly what it goes too.

mctkmd64.sys Tue Oct 05 05:55:21 2010 (4CAAF609) Most likely belongs to a Magic Control Technology UVTP100 USB to VGA adapter Couldn't locate drivers at: Magic Control Technology
Are you using a usb to video adapter of some sort?
Or is this information incorrect?

windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I have two displays one VGA and one DIV adapter to VGA I did at one time have a USB to VGA but it played up so I got rid of it. This could be a throw back to that.

As I don't use this USB/VGA system now I have deleted the MCT folder and all its contents.
We shall see how it works now.

Let me know if I have done the wrong thing..
