Windows 7: Disk Management

Disk Management

Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.

The Disk Management is no longer showing the disks - all it has is a blank screen with a message at the base - Connecting to Virtual Disk Service. Going to Services shows this set to manual and started. Can anyone help with this. Also a few days ago when hooking up an external drive the PC no longer automatically recognised the drive and it was necessary to allocate a drive letter via Disk Management but this facility is no longer available. Everything was working fine until then so any input/help appreciated.

Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram, SSD128gb and HD500gb.

Do the disks show up in Device Manager and in the BIOS?

I think I'd be inclined to run the system file checker making sure you've backed everything up first.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If that doesn't find anything try a full anti-virus scan in Safe Mode.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

When you get things up and running you might want to change the external drive's drive letter to one higher up the alphabet so as to avoid any conflict with the existing drives.

Thanks SeaVixen - did as suggested and rebooted. CHKDSK ran automatically and found several errors. All now sorted. Drives showing as they should and new external drives recognised fine. Thanks for your help
