Explorer and folder seriously slow after SP1

I installed SP1 on my Qosmio F60 i7 W7HP32 laptop, on which W7 had been working very well and fast. After installing SP1, I have now lost about 2 days of productivity due to the serious crash in performance. I wish I had never installed it.

The main symptom is that when I use Explorer to try and open a folder, it does not display the contents for several minutes, just the green progress bar slowly progressing. When this happens it affects the responsiveness of all other programs, for instance I can't even type into dialogues or open/close programs and even web connections time out. But Task Manager shows that only 1-3% of CPU is being used whilst Explorer is busy. I checked the Indexing options and it did not display the main C drive so i added that but have not seen any improvement yet.

Other checks I did was to run Troubleshooting>performance and it initially found Superfetch not running, also Intel Rapid Storage stopped working. I updated the driver for the latter and now I don't get superfetch not running and Intel RST is running OK. I also scanned with SFC, nothing wrong found.

Before someone tells me it must be a "third party software" issue, I have done nothing but install SP1 on a computer that had been perfectly working.

Startup.txt is attached, but all of those were not causing any issues until I installed SP1. Now, it takes 15 minutes each time I click on Explorer. Merely attaching the file took several minutes because i had to wait for Explorer to show the file location.

I am also trying rebuilding indexing files. Could that be the issue? I had to re-enable Indexing in Programs > Windows Features because I found it disabled (nothing that I have done, maybe it was caused by the SP1 install). I also changed Folder optimisation to "documents" in a top level folder (Users) and checked "apply to subfolders". These have not yet solved the problem.

This has been solved. In the end all that was needed was to rebuild the index. That took several hours. When the folders started responding quickly again, I then noticed another problem - Windows Search was not starting. However, whilst i was researching that issue and left the computer sorting itself out, after a reboot all was fine.

All of this was caused by SP1 install as far as i can see, and it has shaken my confidence in Windows 7, previously i had found it excellent.

Anyway - it works now - but each reboot causes me anxiety..

Well as I feared, after running OK for one day I have rebooted this morning and Windows won't load. Repair says it can't fix it automatically.

End of the line for me and Windows. What a liability!

Well all was fine until I installed SP1. Nothing else has been installed or changed. The computer was always up to date, cleaned with up to date Kaspersky IS 2010, and I had never had any Windows problems whatsoever. Until SP1. Conclusion, if I hadn't installed SP1 I would still have a working computer.

My computer will now not start Windows, it gets as far as the blank screen after the windows icon, when the mouse cursor first appears but log on screen does not.

Startup repair run at boot returns an error, that it can't automatically repair.

System restore run at advanced boot on all the last backup restore points proceed "restoring files" until "Finished" then displays an error that it did not succeed. Possibly because the last backup I did failed (a common experience) and it can't find all the restore points.

I guess I am reduced to using a live CD to backup all my data and having to do a Toshiba recovery to factory state?.
