    RAM usage creeps up?

    Hi Folks,
I'm on the RTM build (one of the custom "touched" builds) and I've noticed that my RAM usage seems to rise the longer I'm on.
For instance: Yesterday I came home from work and started my machine. After startup the RAM was at around 27% just idling. I then checked my mails, looked at various news sites, and then browsed this forum, all the while playing music through Winamp.
At this point my RAM was around 31% which seems fine as I was doing various things at once.
I then closed Firefox and , leaving Winamp playing music (no visualization), sat back in my chair to read the newspaper.
After about an hour of this I returned to the pc to put on some different music and my RAM is at 40%!
After another hour or so it was at 42%.
It's not Winamp related or music related as I noticed the same thing the other day when I had literally closed all major apps and just had the desktop up.
So it just seems that it is length of time related.
Anyone else noticed this or have any comments,

    John

Best way to diagnose is to run taskmanager (right-click task bar). It could be indexing, browser, anti virus etc. watch task manager for a while and it will be obvious.

To me, it seems people "worry" too much about RAM usage on their computer. Vista and 7, both use RAM differently than in the past and it keeps things cached. Therefore, if another app comes along and needs RAM, windows will drop that cached stuff and provide the necessarily ram.

The way I figure, I have 8GB of RAM, over time I'd love to see every single bit of it consumed. This way, I would have the best performance possible. As long as Windows releases it when it's needed for other things, I don't see the issue.

just want to say I like your W7 build number
    pretty old one!

Anyway, it is strange, my ram(4 gig) never goes so high, 32-34% the most and I do a lot of things at once.

Edit: Oh no, you changed it now! 1945 was better

Agree. You can force more ram use by minimizing (or eliminating) page file. I want my ram used. cpu cycles are different.

Thanks Guys, that's reassuring and I imagine pparks is right and I shouldn't worry about it as I've 4GB to go at.
Seems the RTM uses more RAM than 7229 or 7232 however. I was at a pretty constant 26% on those builds and never went above 30%.
I could get another 4GB but is it worth it?

    Thanks again, John:)

I've had the same problem some times.
    I have 3GB of RAM.
So yea I started windows 7 and my RAM was like 25%.
After that I played a little world of warcraft, few games of cod4 online exc. After I stopped playing both games. Checked my RAM: 54%.
Then I went to play a little Crysis....Works fine.
Then crysis froze so I terminated it. 84% RAM usage here, NO PROGRAMS RUNNING.

Then when I started Crysis back my PC crashed and I had to force re-boot.
This was on version 7100, 32-bit.
    Currently BURNING: 7600, 64-bit
Hope my gaming performance goes UP!

Depends completely on what you do with your computer. My newest build has 8GB of RAM....and I got it for 1 and only 1 thing. Running Virtual Machines. I'm a systems admin for a living, so I tend to screw around alot with virtual machines and having lots of extra ram is great for that. Aside from that, it doesn't improve my performance hardly anywhere else.

Thanks for the reply pp. I thought as much from what I'd read.
I use my machine for pleasure not work, so it's games and photoshop that are probably the most demanding thing I do.
Gamepro127. That sounds like a whole different problem in terms of magnitude compared to mine. I did find my gaming performance was more stable in x64 though. No freezes or crashes at all.

    Cheers all, J

Turn off superfetch, indexing, windows defender, windows drive protection, tweak Aero based on your graphics card and hey presto: you to can have a "better than XP" performing Windows Xperience!
