Windows 7: Windows 7 SLEEP MODE FIX !

05 Aug 2009   #11

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

I've pretty much given up on sleep on the desktop.

It only takes ONE stupid driver out of 35 to compeltely hose you.

Sleep works great on laptops where the laptop manufacturer has beaten their hardware vendors over the head till they were sleep compliant. And /maybe/ something like an HP desktop will IF you don't install any additional hardware.

But with machines like most of us probably have, self build out of "random" parts. The chance that every single hardware driver will behave through sleep is unfortiunately pretty low.

I too ususaly get one maybe two sleep cycyles before I have to reset. Meaning I always have to close everything anyway lest I lose a file so it really isn't worth it.

Cant wait to get my SSD in in a couple of days and booting will seem like coming out of sleep anyway

There's also another reason for wakeup.

If you go into network adapters, and go into properties on whatever network card you're using, click configure and then the power management tab... Uncheck the "Allow this device to wake the computer".

Worked as advertised on Sony Vaio SZ6

The tags are slightly off for the control panel dialog box, but use common sense, they are all there, and your will find them.
For me, the step: Allow wake timers > disable/enable try both settings
can be left as default in the "disable" mode, no need to try both.

Before the fix, 7's much touted Sleep Mode was working intermittently at best. This nails the problem! ... instantly goes off... and better still, instantly comes back on when asked.

Thanks for saving me the hassle of trying to fix the problems with a Clean Install... that would have wasted hours!

Keep-up the good work.... it is greatly appreciated!

I may have been a bit premature...

My apologies! ...but the fix was not lasting... and from all indications, our dear friends at Sony, who freely charge a stiff premium for their products, nonetheless can't be bothered to offer a Win 7 driver upgrade for the 3 year old line. Hummm, wonder what else Sony makes that I WON'T be buying???

here is why and how to fix it

By default Windows 7 has media sharing turned on ( for xbox , ps3) ect

this pervents it from going into standby Mode

The Fix is Simple

Open control panel and goto

Power Options > change Plan settings > Advanced Power Settings

+Sleep
Allow hybrid Sleep > disabled
Allow wake timers >
disable/enable try both settings

+USB
USB selective suspend > ENABLE

+When Shareing media [ This is the critical one ]

Set to allow the computer to sleep
it works thanks

Been through most of these suggestions, but pc still refused to sleep. Decided to let "troubleshooting" power options do its job; it made some suggestions, which I followed, and problem solved. You can then carefully, one-by-one modify the time settings to your liking but leave the settings alone--and the setting will be as many posters have suggested.

ugg i gave up on sleep mode years ago, it's not just a windows 7 issue either and hibernate has been disabled for longer than i can remember.

where i work i see alot of machines that don't come out of sleep/hibernate it's been an ongoing issue and as fseal points out one driver or peice of hardware could be the problem on a desktop, most of us don't look for hardware that supports or even considers sleep mode compliance and probably would ignore it if it did anyway.

not sure if there really is a fix or quick solution for some people.
