If there are professionals here, then I will gladly take their assistance

I ran the SFC Scan; it reports back no problems.

Should I try the repair install, as suggested by a later poster?

Actually, I have come to look through the bundle of disks that I got with this laptop, and I can't find a Windows 7 disc. It obviously came pre-installed on the computer. Will I be able to do a repair install?

Sorry, I was expecting a reply from karlsnooks after I had entered my system specs.

I will attempt to make a repair install of Windows 7, as linked to by another poster.

One thing to add is that I booted the machine up in safe mode today, and explorer.exe sat there at under 20MB. When I booted back into normal Windows 7, explorer.exe took off again. Does this suggest that something has become wrong about the current versions of Windows 7 that I am running?

That indicates that something is wrong with a non-microsoft program you've installed.

carry out following:
LIST OF STARTUP AND INSTALLED PROGRAMS USING CCLEANER

STARTUP PROGRAMS
CCleaner | Tools icon | Startup button |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side)

Using the PAPER CLIP icon (top panel of a Message Reply),
attach the startup.txt file generated by CCleaner
CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

INSTALLED PROGRAMS
CCleaner | Tools icon | Uninstall button |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side)

Using the PAPER CLIP icon, attach the install.txt file
generated by CCleaner. CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

OK, I made that action at post #6 on this current thread; I've installed nothing new since. I think now that I'm running the bare minimum of installed programs.

Would you like me to run the cleaner again?
