Windows 7: Event Log does not start

Event Log does not start

Hi,

Event Log does not start even though it is set to automatic on startup. This also appears to prevent Task Scheduler and Event Viewer from starting as they dependent on Event Log. When I go to Services and click on Windows Event Log and then Start the service I get this error message:-

"Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer.
Error2: The system cannot find the file specified"

I don't know how long it has been like this (possibly several months) so I am not sure if there is any appropriate restore point to revert to.

I've done a search on this problem. There was previously a similar issue on Vista whereby the solution was to delete an extraneous registry key. This solution doesn't appear to apply in Windows 7.

Any help would be very much appreciated

I suspect that is not the only system problem.. I would first run a system file check and if problems cant be fixed then a repair install

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Read here for more information SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Let us know the results from the report at the end.

Repair Install

Thanks for that. I have run SFC /SCANNOW and it reports that it did not find any integrity violations so I shall try a repair install as you suggest.

No, I haven't managed a repair install. My Windows 7 update disc (from Vista) doesn't seem to work. I followed the procedure set out in the tutorial but I think there must be a problem because of Service Pack 1.
