Windows 7 Default Sevices

Lately we have been plagued by the do-it-yourselfers, those who don't realize that Quack Viper never graduated to Win 7, those who use the super duper tools and so on forth.

These people have, nearly without fail, one thing in common- They have mucked around with the default services and their settings.

For you people who just couldn't leave well enough alone, then this link will help you to repair some of the harm you have done to yourselves.

Guess I'm just frustrated from the rash of problems we are seeing caused by altering the services.

Not sure where you got that from. He's had a list for Windows 7 since 2009, and also a list for Windows 7 with SP1.

Easy enough if you've used his list to disable any, to just look at the list again and restore any, or all to default. As he lists the default values also.

Mentally he has never made the step from the XP invironment to the Win 7 environment. Services should be left as they are. His advice has caused untold misery.

From what I have seen on his site, he doesn't know what half of the services do, but disables them anyway. Then when "his" PC doesn't have a cow, he says its fine for you to disable them too. :rolleyes: :eek:
With todays hardware, quad core processors or better, with gobs or RAM, etc, what does anybody hope to accomplish by disabling services? Even if it did gain you any performance, does anybody really think you'll even notice it? On a netbook maybe? And thats a big maybe, assuming you don't cripple your OS in the process. Just my 2 cents, I think its a wast of time and an accident waiting to happen.

I think Karl has an excellent point. Mucking around with the services is counterproductive - especially if done by people who do not know the internals and interdependencies of the various services.

Example: you turn off the defrag service - then you cannot shrink a partition in Disk Management. OR, I remember from Vista: if you turned the tablet PC services off, the snipping tool would not work....and so on.

FWIW: Anyone who mucks around with system services and doesn't know what they are doing is an accident waiting to happen.
There are lots of "advice" forums where people give FREE advice which many times is worth what you pay for it. Just like people who immediatly start defragging and screwing with the registry with registry cleaners that promise to speed up their machines by a factor of 2X.
Not likely but this does not stop them from downloading the programs and running them several times and then crying when their computer goes to hell in a handbasket.

If there wern't any problems with windows 7 and pc's in general, then consultants and people like us would be out of a job. Kinda like job security.. :)

My bottom line has always been, if it's working don't screw with it.

If you want a real fast computer, it will cost you.

Rich, the funny thing is, in most cases it does not even speed up the system (because most of those services just sit there dormant). In the old days when people had 256MB of RAM, it may have made sense, But nowadays where we all have ample RAM, what is the point.

@Karl:

Just like I mentioned in another posts about using registry cleaners.

Many of the folks having serious problems are uneducated about the details of how Windows OS works.

I think there should be a sticky at the main page of Seven Forums that grabs the attention of new users WARNING THEM TO BE VERY CAUTIOUS ABOUT ALTERING THINGS, perhaps a to the point set of bullet points which specifically spell out what NOT to touch unless you ask a expertly trained Win OS agent on the site.

It seems to me that almost all the problems I see are from users blindly messing around and then digging themselves into a hole, especially those that are trying to "tweak" their system for optimum performance!

Same here. I do not like to tell people to perform a repair or a clean install, but I'm going to be telling a couple of people that today because I just can't figure out what they have tinkered with.

Standard problems can be cured with standard solutions, but problems because someone altered the services and/or the registry or applied some program that is not compatible or applied an old driver are sometimes very difficult to isolate and correct.

We can also add the overclockers to that list.

I really don't think it is necessary to call anyone a Quack, There are always people who don't understand the technical details of what they are doing. Users who visit Charles site "blackviper.com" in most cases are pretty technical.

I personally have visited his site and found that the information was pretty valid for most things. Of course anyone who does not understand technical details can go wrong using sites that are pretty technical.

Just like Mark Minasi's site "minasi.com" for windows server experts, I have been on Mark's site for many years and occasionally see new people who don't even understand what a server is used for.

PS: google Mark Minasi and Charles Sparks to see who they are.

I believe people need to just start taking responsibility for their own actions. If they do not know what they are doing then they shouldn't be messing with these type of settings without getting detailed help with it first. If they decide to just jump in and make changes to these settings without knowing what they are doing or getting additional help first, then you really just cannot blame the person like blackviper that provides these guides.

There's only so much one can do to make a guide as easy to understand as possible for general use by everyone. In the end, it's the sole responsibility of the end user to know their limitations and seek additional help before going off and doing something they have know idea about and crashing their OS.

rant over... ;)

This is an excellent guideline for everything you do in life. Unfortunately many people act differently. Just think how some invest their money or the people that bought houses without knowing how to pay for them.

@Brink:

How about what I mentioned earlier in this thread.?Having a blazing red sticky section about cautions when using Win7. Maybe title it:

" Before using this forum read this," Your New Win 7 Operating System, PRECAUTIONS to take when using it."

Then detail in bullet points which items NOT to change without first asking one of the MVPs or gurus .

I know it really shouldn't be necessary to have this type of thing but unfortunately there are so many computer illiterate people out there and they honestly don't have a clue about how easily you can screw things up just by "grazing the options" to make system changes.

I think that MS should have a set up page built into the OS that forces the user to take several minutes reading simple statements that make this kind of point to the users before they can actually start using it. I think that is half the battle. Sure a few people will b*tch about it but the overwhelming majority of users NEED this type of precautionary primmer. Which I have a feeling would prevent many serious issues.

Hello Legacy,

I would also hope that was already understood by common sense.

I just don't think it would be practical though, and may cause people to get alarmed unnecessarily. Unfortunately, the damage is usually already done before they get here. About all we can do is to help them the best be can with clear details. :(

@Brink:

Ah yes , "common sense", where has it gone?

So many folks today do not have that quality, it is almost scary.

I know when I first got my shiny new HP Pavilion 7955 with Win XP, I really didn't know much about Win OS at all, yet I already understood that it would be wise to only make changes to things that I didn't completely understand after asking. Of course back then there were only a handful of Win XP help sites, and many didn't have expert help only people making suggestions. !!!! Also getting help directly from MS was actually harder back then compared to today with MS Answers!

How about the other suggestion I made about MS putting some kind of brief precautionary statements as a "forced read" before consumers can actually start to use the OS? Even though I and others like us here don't need this I would certainly be willing to see it displayed and wait the few extra minutes so that other less aware users could be cautioned saving lots of trouble in the long run.

This reminds me of the toaster, and computers in many cases are just like toasters, in that you can buy a computer at the local store. They also sell toasters and most don't have a label on the front to not put a metal knife into the toaster slots when it is energized. As John and others have said, there is such a thing as common sense which no one can print enough warnings about.. There will always be someone who defies logic and does the unthinkable.

It will be forever. My computer doesn't XXXXXXX. We don't find out until page 37 that the OP has downloaded 13 programs that duck with the registry. Their are people that think if they can download it great things will happen. They do no research or ask any questions on sites like this before downloading and installing. They never will. I know of no cure for this type of thinking. It's kind of like, (Windows 7 doesn't work like XP) DA, no Windows 7 works better than XP.
