Standby/hibernate problem

Standby/hibernate causes my computer - most of the time, but not always - to restart at the boot screen with an error message warning of an unexpected shut down.
This problem only occurred after I upgraded Vista to the RC, not while I was using the W7 beta daily from a separate partition.
I have unsuccessfully been trying to isolate the cause or conditions for this error. All drivers, incl NVIDIA video drivers, are up to date. I have disabled hybrid sleep, the windows media server preventing sleep, the automatic hibernation and standby settings and anything else I could tweak. I am back to the most basic configuration I could set up. I have also tried enabling and disabling the Sony hibernation service (whatever that does in Win 7)

To reproduce this error:
Fresh start, no applications loaded. Wait 10 mins for all services to start up.
Standby: Screen blanks, disk activity for 20 secs, sleep mode. Wake up is instant.
Wait 10 mins and standby again: Screen blanks again, disk activity continues without coming to an end. No reaction to keybaord, mouse or display being lowered. Hard reset is necessary. (Sometimes, after a lengthy inerval the computer powers off at some time, and reports error on boot)

Any advice on troubleshooting this issue would be appreciated.

If that doesn't work, since you upgraded the Vista partition, that could be the problem. Certain low-level settings may get wacked or weird when upgrading a different OS in place, especially with a beta release. I would try a clean install.

I attempted to follow instructions, but am unable top prevent Win from automatically installing video drivers.

To prevent Win from automatically reinstalling the uninstalled NVIDIA drivers, I disabled windows update automatic driver installation from the System|Advanced Settings|HardWare|Device Installation Settings where I selected "Never install from Win Update".
But this does not prevent the drivers from being reinstalled after a bootup. I am unable to interrupt the process.
How can I circumvent that so I can follow your instructions and apply the most recent driver (Win7 32-bit is available)?

few days ago i updated to win7ultimate (sony vaio fz280e).
and i was trying to find graphics drivers.

i tried the way u suggested with vista drivers.
it seems the driver fits, but when i start any game, the video is bad.
can u explain again if u have tried and got it working?
maybe i'm missing sth.

Download Windows 7 drivers for these devices (if not available, use the Windows Vista drivers - but follow the instructions lower down in this post):
- latest video drivers from nVidia
- latest storage drivers from the manufacturer of the Storage Controller.

Then, uninstall the driver packages currently installed using Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program. If the devices aren't listed there, check the Start Menu for them. If not there, then uninstall the device in Device Manager.

Reboot if needed, dismissing any "Found New Hardware" dialogs that may show up.

Install the Windows 7 drivers by double clicking on them. Reboot as necessary, dismissing any "Found New Hardware" dialogs that may show up.

If using Windows Vista drivers, ensure that you select Compatibility Mode for ALL USERS. Then select "Run as Windows Vista" and "Run as administrator". Then, right click on the driver file, select "Run as adminsitrator" (just to be sure) and execute the installer from there.

it is useful and i understood how to run compatibility mode.
it was fine even without this mode, so that i could actually install NVIDIA 8400GT Vista drivers for win7ultimate, and the system didn't give any sign, and silently accepted the drivers.

but the problem comes when i run a game. then the graphics is so poor, just scrap, it can't be played.

is there any way to solve NVIDIA driver issue??
