Home Premium - defragmentation takes forever

I am using 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, found it was a bit slow.
Goto Disk Defragmenter to analyse, 5 % fragmented.
But I still go ahead.

It had gone 5 passes, relocate...etc.
Then looks like stop at
Pass 5: 0% consolidated

It's been 40 minutes unchanged up to now, still 0% consolidated.
My harddisk is a 320GB one.

Well just to be on the safe side lets run a system file check. I dont think the OS is the problem but SFC is fast and will give us a direction.

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Read here for more information SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Let us know the results from the report at the end.

Hi ManUtdFans, welcome to 7F

To the OP, and zigzag3143.
I remember a time I had a situation like that on my XP machine, and I found that the OS was in a constant state of Indexing. I wonder if that is happening here?

Actually this same situation is also happening with me. It stops after it goes to 5 passes. I have also ran SFC/SCANNOW 3 times already and it hasnt really found anything.

ManUnitedFan,

Let us know when you complete the recommendations from ZigZag.

There are many explanations for what you have observed.

Do us a favor,
fill out your system specs according to this write-up. When you do that then your system specs follow you with each post and all we need to do is click on that small print "my system specs" in the bottom-right of a post.

Looking forward to seeing your specs and the results requested.

I've heard that the default Disk Defrag is slow. Try Defraggler

I recommend against using Defraggler due to problems involving your shadow copies.

The Win 7 Defragger is safe and has no complications.
