Windows 7 User Folder Too Big - 27 Gb

    Hi -

I've followed the instructions here - Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

My SSD is only about 70Gb, so I want to move the 27-ish Gb User folder (primarily my main User account I use - the admin / guest accounts use next to nothing.

But get a nasty error when re-booting (something like folder C:\....Users is unavailable, my Desktop is gone, Outlook doesn't seem to remember it's installed, neither does OfficeTime. Firefox doesn't look anything like I've configured it either - no remembered passwords, toolbar completely different.

Is there a quick way I can move the 27Gb User account from my C:\ SSD drive?

I'm generally very impressed with Windows 7, but it seems to be something that Microsoft have overlooked - the popularity of SSD's, and their limitation in terms of size...

I'll be looking at this after trying a System Restore - User Profile - Change Default Location - but if anyone has any better ideas, please do shout me.

    D

    Hello Darren,

Instead of moving your user profile folder or subfolders to another location and risk having issues like the one you have now, you might consider this below to be able to access the files from your libraries with the files (ex: documents, music, pictures, etc....) actually being located where you like instead to save space on your C: drive.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I managed to fix the issue by undoing the 'move user folder' instructions that I originally followed here - Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

Then by following Method 1 instructions on this post - You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon

I'm wondering if moving the user folder as per the instructions I followed initially (Move the Users Directory in Windows 7) - then following Method 1 on You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon - if that would actually work.

Would free up a lot of room on my C drive for sure.

If I try it, and if it works, I'll post back.

That's great news. I hope using libraries may work better for you.
