Windows 7 desktop icons and toolbars going away

I baught a new computer and everything was working well until my computer did an update. This was within 24 hours of buying the PC and bringing it home. Ever since the update everytime either i shut my monitor off or is going iunto sleep mode when i bring it out of sleep mode or turn the monitor back on all of my desktop icons and the tool bars are gone. I'm left with nothing but a backround picture and the rest is blank. I've been fixing this by right clicking the desktop and then clicking screen resolution and changing the screen to the other choice but this is a true pain to do everytime. I would much rather know why my icons and tool bar are poofing on me. Someone please help me with this.

Do a System Restore to before the update, see if that fixes the problem.

Welcome to Seven Forums jggl12603. The suggestion of a system restore point would be my first choice as well.

If no help, the I'd run the System File Checker:

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Restarting Explorer would likely correct the problem without rebooting, but not the repeating problem itself.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc> Click on explorer.exe and choose End Process> File> New task (Run)> type in explorer.exe> Enter

You can also perform a clean start to see if a program is interfering

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Excellent suggestions from my colleagues! It's also possible that it was the downloading of the Update itself that caused the problem. If you decide not to do the System Restore, you can also try just uninstalling the Update and reinstalling it, to see if the Desktop icons and toolbar problems right themselves.
