Windows 7 is running way too slow, please help!

I just got a new Dell Inspiron ONE 2320 with Windows 7 and it is unbelievably slow! I has XP on my old computer and never had these issues.

Google Chrome takes forever, IE9 is much worse and just getting into My Documents takes a long time as well. I checked for performance issues in the control panel and it came back saying that my computer is set up to run programs at Startup that may cause delays. The problem is that I don't know which programs can be disabled at startup.

I also checked the memory and it says its at 2.86 GB. That seems high for a new computer, doesn't it? The physical memory also says it has about 2900 mb in use. I just don't understand that.

I'll do my best to describe the computer. The computer is a Dell Inspiron ONE 2320 and the Processor is an Intel Core i3-2100 CPU @3.10GHz 3.10GHz. RAM is 4.00 GB. It's a 64 bit operating system.

Here are the programs I have running on the startup tab on the system configuration:

    Webcam Central
    stage_primary
    Roxio Burn
    Realtek HD Audio Manager
    PowerReg
    notes_startup_widget
    NeroLauncher
    Kasperky Anti Virus
Java Platform SE Auto Updater 2.0
    Intel PROSet/Wireless
Intel Common User Interface (this actualy appears 3 times)
    Intel PROSet/Wireless Bluetooth
    Google Update
    FATrayMon
    DELLOSD
    COMMONSDK
    CHICONY_OSD
    Adobe Reader and Manager
    Adobe Acrobat
    Accuweather

I know what some of this is, but not most of it. Does anyone know which of these can be disabled from the startup? Or which ones might be taking up so much memory? I have very little documents and pictures on this computer. Thanks!

i'd start out by disabling all but (Anti Virus) and see if that helps . you can always go back in and enable the
    settings again if need be.

That looks like heaps (and heaps and heaps!) of start up programs, in the startup tab of system configuration, I have only my antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials.

I would hazard a guess at saying you can disable everything on your list apart from Kaspersky AV. Some, you may choose to leave at startup though, like your notes widget. A few on your list I don't recognise, but I'm sure more knowledgable people than me will chime in too.

EDIT: Scrooge beat me to it.

Thank you! This is how it came too. All we did was put the anit virus and google chrome on it. I can't believe they'd have all this running as the default.

You can disable all of your startup items, but ...

    • disable: Webcam Central
    • ???: stage_primary
    • disable: Roxio Burn
    • leave alone: Realtek HD Audio Manager
    • ???: PowerReg
    • ???: notes_startup_widget
    • disable: NeroLauncher
    • leave alone: Kasperky Anti Virus
    • disable PERMANENTLY: Java Platform SE Auto Updater 2.0
    • leave alone: Intel PROSet/Wireless
    • ???: Intel Common User Interface (this actualy appears 3 times)
    • disable, unless you need bluetooth: Intel PROSet/Wireless Bluetooth
    • disable PERMANENTLY: Google Update
    • ???: FATrayMon
    • ???: DELLOSD
    • ???: COMMONSDK
    • ???: CHICONY_OSD
    • disable PERMANENTLY: Adobe Reader and Manager
    • disable PERMANENTLY: Adobe Acrobat
    • disable: Accuweather

Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader are useless. Use Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader ... it's free and it's lightweight, and faster than Acrobat. There's also Foxit Editor if you need it. Not free. But do you really need either one???

Do you need BOTH Roxio Burn and Nero. They do the same thing. Pick just one and uninstall the other. In either case, there's no need to have them autostart, so disable their autorun entries.

Don't tempt fate: don't disable your Kaspersky antivirus program.

Note, though, that most of your autorun items will not bog down your computer after they've started up. So I wouldn't expect any significant performance improvement.

    Look elsewhere for performance problems.

    • You have 4 GB of RAM. That's about the minimum desired for Win 7. It's normal for Win 7 to use around 2 GB of RAM when idling. So your 2.9 GB usage is not a surprise. As long as you have significant free RAM available, that should not be a bottleneck.
    • Are any programs using REALLY LARGE amounts of memory?
    • More importantly, do any of them expend a large, sustained amount of CPU usage?

Uncheck everything except for your antivirus, anything mentioning intel, webcam central and dellosd.
