Windows 7: Copy process uses 100% cpu utilization

Copy process uses 100% cpu utilization

Need some help here. Trying to copy files from one external HD to another using Windows Explorer.

The moment the copy process is started - the CPU hits 100% and the whole system becomes sluggish. When I click on cancel - the system does not restore CPU utilization (it's still 100%) and have to reboot to regain usage of the system.

Any ideas would help. I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows 7.

Thanks!

are you using disk caching and or compression on either drive, neither should cause this but either may on a ill configured machine, also check the disk for defragmentation

NVIDIA nForce Chipset Driver*

WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with AMD Processors)*

You may be experiencing driver issues with the USB. The BIOS update makes some changes relative to Vista SP2 which may or may not affect Windows 7. A chipset driver update is usually a good thing.

I've got the same thing. Tried to copy from external HDD e.g. x:\movies\my movies\video.avi to x:\movies\video.avi and half way through the CPU went up to 100%. I have to reboot before I can use my laptop again. The same thing when copying from external to external. The only workaround i found it to copy the file to the internal HDD and then back to the external one. Any ideas how to sort this out?

Looks like there are many users with similar problem...

I also have the same problem in copying large files from internal HDD to external USB devices (flash disk and portable HDD). The copy process start and then halt after a while, then a restart is needed.

My 2 other computers, Dell 600m and Asus EeePC 1000HE (both are using Windows 7 Prof 32), do not have this problem.

My affected computer is Acer M5641 (Q6600, nForce, Windows 7 Ultimate x64) and already installed latest nvidia nforce chipset 15.37 and 15.46.
