    What "thread registry file"?

Also, were there any software/hardware changes just before this first started happening?

One of the most common reasons for this is if the paging (aka swap) file has been set to clear upon shutdown. Depending on the size of it, this can be a considerable period of time. See http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/15...-shutdown.html to enable or disable this feature.

I didn't mean disable your paging file completely. What I meant was to disable the clearing of it upon restart/shutdown (this is where the file is overwritten by nul bytes for security measures).
