Standby and Hibernate not working

I can't seem to get Standby or Hibernate to work at the moment. If I select either, it just blanks the screen which comes back on as soon as I move the mouse.

I've created two energy reports, which I've uploaded to Energy Reports.zip

The second one I made after closing MSI Afterburner, Yahoo Widgets and Windows Sidebar, but it didn't make any difference.

I've checked every USB port/hub/device in Device Manager and those that have a power management tab are set to "Allow the computer to turn off this device" and have "Allow this device to wake the computer" unticked.

The settings in Power Options seem fine and are set to:
Sleep after 60 mins
Allow hybrid sleep On
Hibernate after 120 minutes
Allow wake timers Enable

but I'm just trying to get it to work when I select Standby/Hibernate manually at the moment.

The problem seems to be partially solved now. I'll explain what I found.

Sleep states S1 and S3 are available. S2 is not available.

There were no wake events in the logs.

There was a HID-compliant mouse, two HID keyboard devices and my Realtek NIC that were able to wake my computer. I disabled all of these from doing so and then was able to standby. However Hibernate still doesn't work and just returns me to the Windows login screen. I've re-enabled Wake with the NIC (Magic Packets only) as I need to use this, and I can still standby.

I normally use a gadget for Standby/Hibernate Add Windows Vista Gadgets but this still doesn't work and when I click Standby it justs sends me to the Windows login screen (the same as Hibernate does from the Start Menu). Perhaps if we can get Hibernate working from the Start Menu, the gadget will start working properly as well though.

I'm afraid it doesn't seem very practical to upload screenshots of my energy report as it would take eight screenshots. I've renamed it to .txt so that I could upload it, but I could convert it to a PDF instead if that would be helpful.

Doveman, are you using vista gadgets for windows 7? Is there any difference when you have the gadget disabled and use hibernate from the start menu? By standby do you mean sleep? You have hybrid sleep disabled and are using sleep and hibernate seperately then?

Yeah, that gadget worked fine before but not since I re-installed on new hardware. Thanks for the link to the shortcut. The gadget looks better but I'll use that if I can't get it working.

I don't need to disable the gadget to get standby/sleep to work from the start menu. I've made some progress and some of my issues might be related to MediaPortal, so I'm just working to eliminate them at the moment and trying to work out if there's something else that's causing it to go into Away mode instead of sleep.

Thanks. I did have an unsaved theme, which I've saved now. It didn't seem to be preventing the PC from sleeping but at least I've eliminated that as a potential cause in future.

Refusal to sleep or hibernate is often caused by display driver. Update yours from optional Windows Updates or the device or computer's Support Downloads webpage, or try another recent WIn7 or Vista driver.

I'm still struggling with this problem.

I've reinstalled Windows 7 as the previous installation was a bit of a mess. I've had standby working, but it seems to have broken again. Yesterday, I set it to standby after 2 mins and tried shutting down programs until I'd killed pretty much everything I could and it still wouldn't standby. Then I rebooted and reset my BIOS options to default (I had my RAM at 1600Mhz and my NB at 2800Mhz) in case the overclock was a problem and after rebooting it did standby after about 2 mins.

Today I'm having the same problem even though I haven't changed the BIOS options again. I tried shutting stuff down and even after rebooting it won't go to standby. Under Power Options I tried changing Wireless Power Saving Mode from Maximum Performance to Maximum Power Saving, the same for Javascript Timer Frequency and changing USB Selective suspend setting to Disabled.

I've looked at the thread you linked to, but that seems to be concerned with making a Boot, Shutdown or Reboot trace so I'm not sure how it's going to help me diagnose my failure to standby problem.

I've been advised elsewhere that Windows checks whether it can go to standby by monitoring user activity (mouse, keyboard, remote) and programs telling it not to suspend by calling SetThreadExecutionState(SYSTEM_REQUIRED). Is there any way to monitor for these, to see if a particular program is calling this state?
