Should I defragment my (18% fragmented) SSD?

I agree with everything Hopalong said. I would also stay away from System mechanic too. Windows 7 is the very best at keeping itself Clean and fully functional. Many or most of these type registry cleaners and tune up utilities will mess Windows 7 up. As far as tweeks to your SSD. I would do very little. Make sure defrag is turned off, check your alignment, turn off hibernate will save you about 8GB of space on the SSD) and make sure trim is enabled. As I recall you used Paragon migrate to transfer your OS. If you did it will be aligned. But, to check these things, open an elevated command prompt (click start, type cmd in the search box, on the cmd entry that appears, right click it and select run as administrator. Copy/paste this in the command window powercfg -h off and press enter, That will disable Hibernate and save space on the SSD. after that copy/paste this into the window and press enter fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify If it returns DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled) in the same window type diskpart and press enter, in a few seconds it will respond diskpart. type 'list disk' and press enter. It will list all hard drive in or connected to your machine, each given a number. I believe you have a laptop so only 1 should be listed as disk 0. But if you have others look for your SSD and the number it was given. type select disk # (where # is the number of the disk, yours will probably be 0) example: select disk 0 and press enter, it will reply that disk 0 is now the selected disk, type list partition and press enter. It will show the disk size and offset. The offset is your alignment. As long as it is divisible by 4 it is OK. If you get a number you don't understand or you think is not right, post a screenshot here and one of us will tell you about it. Other than that, you really don't need to do anything. You can find tweeks all over the internet that recommend all sorts of things. They are not necessary and too many people have tweeked their SSD to where it no longer gives good performance. This is all I do to mine. I have 4 by 3 manufacturers and all work quite well.

    Hi Chaps...

    Many, many thanks.

I ran the Windows experience .. that has changed in the Primary Data Transfer Rate to 7.5 so, I guess TRIM has kicked in as I have read somewhere that this forces TRIM to work when it does the system check for new hardware and calibrates the new scores.

Base score is a crappy 5.9 ..lol this is the graphic vibe to run Areo.

    Processor 7.0
    RAM 7.7
Graphics (desktop performance to run Aero) 5.9 ... base score :-/
    Gaming Graphics 6.6
    Primary Hard Disk 7.5

I will do the things essenbe has asked I'm about to copy the posting to wordpad and save to usb so I can go into the studio and run the commands..

    Cheers!

    Mr. Bass,

do yourself a favor and keep things simple. No "tuning" tools, no tweaks no playing around with the SSD. And do not be afraid that the SSD is fragile and cannot stand a lot of R/W operations - it is a lot sturdier than a spinning disk and there is no reason to move ANY system files away from it.

The only 2 actions I recommend is to move your user folders to the HDD and if you do not use hiberate, get rid of the hiberfile. The cmd command is powercfg -h off

That's all - enjoy your new SSD.

    Hello essenbe and whs,

I Have now kept it simple. lol very........ :)

So I have done the tasks below.. using the run cmd...

1 TRIM is on... it was on by default ... so Win 7 did this. :)
2 Hibernate is now off ... 40.4 Gb free space out off the 59.6 available on the SSD drive ... which is C. :)
3 All 3rd party tweak tools and defraggers are off .......... totally uninstalled of the machine. I will use the default Microsoft defrag for my spinners.
4 Only O.S and music programs are on the SSD.
5 Its a music studio laptop.... so external drives are used for copious amounts of 24 bit .WAV files I never used to keep them on machines. (I have lots of cold back up drives as well)

The reason why I joined this forum is the quality of the advice.

I NEVER join forums... NEVER, but as I was new to Windows 7 operating system ... I really needed some strong advice.

I'm a music producer, mastering engineer ..lol very technical in other areas ... but this has been fun. And well many thanks for all the good advice. The music laptop runs like a charm.. lol providing I don't use Windows explorer to open folders with metadata written to .WAV files as this send it crazy.

    Have a great day!

    Nitey Nite..
