Hello Derek, and welcome to these Sevenforums!

My name is Dusty, and hopefully I (and any others) can lead you to a solution.

Click this link to another post in Sevenforums as there was a similar problem. Post back if it helps or not. Here it is: Standby and Hibernate not working

Try updating your display driver which is a major cause of Sleep and Hibernate issues.

Try also resetting Po wer Options to default, then set Hibernate to 1 minute to test it.

Next turn hibernate off, reboot then turn it back on to clear hiberfile.

If these fail use the tool which Pro's use to trace these issues: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

hibernate

Hi all
Thanks for the suggestions, have tried them but still have the same problem. I have
installed "win perf toolkit" but cannot see how to use it!!

My computer is a desktop and haven't got a sleep button, it actually does hibernate & resume but with no lag.
My XP allowed me to hibernate, turn off power and resume at a later date .. which is what I'd like Windows 7 to do.

Is this a problem with Hibernate? You might consider not using a win 7 performance enhancer as it really isn't needed and a few of them can cause more harm than good.

You don't have the sleep button? When you hibernate, you do not then need to switch the computer off, it will do this automatically. Are you saying your computer does this but it lags afterward? Is this why you attempted the performance toolkit?

Win 7 does hibernate, but you cannot turn it off after you click hibernate. You may have to click the power button to turn the computer back on after hibernate, but the time it does it is just whenever you tun it back on.

Do you know the difference between hibernate and sleep?

Also, how can you have both of these following options?

Dusty, the components of the perf toolkit are for taking traces of system performance problems (like hibernate issues). It doesn't do anything unless told to explicitly from the command line.

As to the OP, when the machine wakes up after failing to hibernate, can you simply post to us the output of the following command executed from an elevated cmd prompt?
Code:
powercfg -lastwake

I appologize, I seem to have skipped right over Greg's post. Obviously I don't know much about the performance toolkit, I had thought it was an optimizer. Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace

That a very cool tool to have. Even more embarrassing, I have known about the tool previously

My bad. Time to

hibernate

Hi all .. again
Have tried all your suggestions and still hibernate -OK computer switches off and immediately resumes to the desktop.
Boot trace - shows 3 files, (1) a performance analyser (2)a cabinet file (3) a text doc.
I cannot make head nor tail of 1 & 2 .. one is a graphic display and the other shows
.snp extensions.
In the register I see the following Switch user=100/ Log off = 1 / Lock=200 / Restart=4
Sleep = 10/ Hibernate = 40 and Shutdown = 2.

Custom plan 1: Turn off display = never ... Computer to sleep = never.
In advanced settings: Sleep after = never ... Allow hybrid sleep = off ...
... hibernate after = 1 min ... Allow wakeup timers = disabled.

I seem to be adding checking programs to the computer but get no changes! maybe I should forget about hibernation!
