    Very slow boot up 20+ mins

    Hi there,

    I have recently discovered my pc is taking 20+ minute to boot up, I have virus scanned and sfc/scannow which has not pick up any violations. I have also tried a clean boot to see if I can locate the issue and still nothing seems to sort it. I also read that it may be a ram problem which I used memtest to check and I let it pass overnight 8-9 passes and still nothing please help as I'm completely confused as to why this could be happening. My pc always boots up just taking a long time to do so plus my Avg updates as soon as desktop appears. The only problem I think may have caused it was a critical update in windows which stopped when my pc froze when i rebooted it didn't take as long as it does now but longer than it normally did. I have updated all drivers and updates and still the problem persists.

    Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

    Windows 7 boot time should not be more than 30 seconds.

    Right click on Computer and click on Manage and then select Event Viewer. Go to the System - Windows logs section and check which process is taking up more time during booting up. Try checking the boot speed in safe mode and compare.

    I have seen these issues with RAID controllers from time to time. Do you have a RAID controller? If not, follow the next steps.

    Recommend the following:
    1. Shut down and turn off the computer.
    2. Turn on your computer and follow the steps in the Advanced Boot Options tutorial
    3. Run Repair Your Computer
    4. Run a startup repair following the steps in System Recovery Options OPTION ONE

    If the above does not work, run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker. You may need to run it up to three times to repair all system files.

    Hello CityLady,

    As well as the advice the others have given you...

    * Please list your System Security.
    Did you computer come with an Anti Virus program preinstalled?
    If so, how did you remove it?

    BTW There should be no need for AVG to update
    as soon as your desktop appears. {Change the update schedule if more convenient}

    * On a regular basis check in Task Manager/ Processes/ All Users to see what is running there.

    Check Start > run > msconfig > Start up { See what is listed there. }

    * Check in Event Viewer/ for errors frequently.
    Note any with a red mark in Application.

    * Monitor regularly >Task manager - Performance - - Resource monitor - CPU, Memory etc}

    *Remove any software you have evaluated and decided you don't want to keep.

    Hello again and thank you for your quick responses to my problem.

    Here are some recent errors in the event log. I have tried most of the things you suggest here and still it persists. My AV is and always has been AVG. I am not sure about raid as not very experienced with this so I wouldn't know where to look. My pc works fine when booted to desktop but just takes so long to get there.

    I am a little concerned about the user profile service errors or am I worrying over nothing there. I am also having trouble with backups too saying back was unsuccessful as error reporting service will not connect to MS error reporting. please tell me anything more you require to assist....and how to get what you need to diagnose the problem.

    again thanks

    Also in msconfig there are not many services running 6 in total and programs 1 which is Avg the rest are all unticked as, I was told that only my AV should be the only one ticked in the programs.

    here is a list of services running

    Do you have a restore point going back prior to when the startup issue first began?

    System Restore

    If yes, see if that fixes the problem. Using a restore point will remove any updates, drivers, programs, etc that were installed after the restore point date.

    I'd suggest running Windows Updates again. Depending on how many updates need to be reinstalled, I'd do just a few at a time. Check your computer for any problems. If the slow startup occurs you'll know which three or four updates to remove. Install them one at a time. If the slow startup happens you'll knw exactly which update is the problem.

    As for drivers, I believe in the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it it." Installing newer drivers can cause issues so if your machine is working fine without the newer drivers, don't reinstall them. IMHO.

    If you installed any programs after the restore point date, same thing. Reinstall just one at a time, see how your machine acts. If problems occur you'll know which program is causing the issue.

    If you DON'T have a restore point going back prior to when the startup issue first began, none of the above will matter.

    marsmimar,

    Yes I have several restore points which last night I restored to about 8 days ago and still this boot up the same..... I can go back further up to 3 weeks if I remember but this problem only started 2-3 days ago so going back 8 days would have shown some improvements maybe....

    When you restored to about 8 days ago, did you reinstall any of the Windows Updates, drivers, etc?
