I'm still waiting to see the first documented case of CCleaner's Registry cleaner messing up someone's OS.

Have helped install CCleaner on hundreds of installs representing thousands of uses over 15 years time and never had a single report of it causing any problems.

It is perhaps the singlemost respected little app in the entire tech world, so i dont' know why it is maligned repeatedly with hearsay.

On the other hand most other Registry cleaners are sales operations without a whit of the genius CCleaner is built upon. They will almost certainly ruin your OS.

It is important for us to always remember that people to whom we give advice are not always blessed with the same knowledge / ability & experience we have.
Therefore sometimes it is necessary to err on the side of caution.
Our personal experience is often irrelevant.

Those are the people who I'm referring to, upon whose computers I've helped install CCleaner hundreds of times representing thousands of uses. I am not the one using it - they are - and not one of them has ever reported a problem that can conceivably be traced to CCleaner.

Every time one of these threads come up it is repeated that CCleaner Registry cleaner can mess up your computer. So where are the documented cases - a single one?

I am sure what you say is correct regarding your wide personal experience...

However one cap never fits all.
IMHO Generic advice should err on the side of caution.

There are always two sides to every situation. Personally I dont advocate the use of Ccleaner or any other reg cleaner.

Personally I have had 2 Issues with Ccleaner myself but I dont let my experience influence my recommendations.

On the issue of Ccleaners necessity in the first place I bow to a wizard (Mark Russinovich) whose opinion I value.

I don't think he's classed CCleaner as a registry cleaner here, mainly because it only cleans up leftover keys in Registry and makes no other determination about them as the Registry Cleaners do (badly).

I have almost become persuaded by the line of thinking that Win7 needs no cleaner or defragger other than it's native one. However CCleaner can often find a gig of schmutz when Disk Cleanup will find less than half that amount. So I can't see giving it up.

I also believe that a boot defrag like Puran's which gets at System files is more powerful than the Win7 native defragger - but that's left to another thread.
