Check al th e ports, it should be under an "Advanced" tab which is missing from that page.

If there is no advanced tab then the driver does not support turning it off

This may be one reason why people resort to the drastic measure of switching to IDE mode

So you're saying that it isn't in IDE mode?

I don't know, you can check your BIOS.

But if it is in IDE mode then NCQ is not enabled so this solution is not going to fix it. If you are in AHCI mode, then it may still be a problem with NCQ, but if the driver does not let you turn it off, you will have to try updating the storage driver (I'd do that first) or try updating the HD firmware (Scary) or dropping back to IDE mode which will probably require a windows reinstall like that other forum said...

It certainly does seem to be related to the storage driver/SATA/HD firmware though, at least that's my bet having been through this before..

SpringHalo, you might want to start here for driver updates, and it might make sense to go "whole hog" and update all your devices that match drivers in that list to the latest versions.

I updated everything that has to do with the motherboard, as well as most of the items on that page. I also checked in the BIOS, and the controller mode is set to IDE.

EDIT:Still happening.

EDIT2: Would re-installing windows help fix this? I have my hard drive set up so the users/ProgramData directories are on a separate partition, leaving 40GB for windows.

Uh oh, that's not good. It would explain the frequent freezes though if the platters, motor, or motherboard in the hard disk have an issue though.

Ack!

Yeah, the drive going bad could definitely explain it!

I think you found your solution. Hopefully you can back up your user data before it goes completely.

Yeah, I've restarted quite a few times, and the problem just happens like normal, albiet more frequently. I've got a trusty 500GB backup drive filled to the brim with data, and I believe my drive has a warranty, so if these seagate repair programs don't work, I'll get a replacement.

Thanks for all your help! I'll get back once I see how repair goes.
