Stacking of notification area icons gone wrong

Up until last night the notification area icons would stack nicely on top of each other like this:

Icon | Icon | Icon
Icon | Icon | Icon

Suddenly it just started doing this, which I do not want:

Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon

How do I change it back to the way it was?

Right click on the Taskbar. See if "Lock the Taskbar" is checked or unchecked. Click it to toggle the current state.

If that doesn't fix it you may have to unlock it and move the slider to adjust the amount allocated to the system tray. I have double height taskbar myself.

Your reply put me on the right track. When I unlocked the Taskbar I went to raise it up to a third level just to see what would happen, and slightest move upward did the trick. The icons stacked the way I like them. Thanks!
