yeah plus its a 64 bit system... i have an install.wim file with a winsxs under 250mb ready to go. that i didnt beileve.
working on getting the manifest folder cleaned up by checking against hashes found in the folders names that get emptied out in the process. it is taking 30 secs for each file to be checked and there is 12,163 files. thats like 100 minutes... i can get it down to 50 minutes easily, however i have to write the code yet...
it takes a few hours to check for duplicates / and delete those found in the winsxs folder, and a few minutes to delete the empty folders / extact the needed hashes for the "manifests" process, also the first phase takes about 45 minutes to form a hash Database
so at least 4 hours to complete, and my hard drive scores a 7.7 in the experience index
i will be releasing the program soon, looking for a few testers that know how to back up and restore thier systems with ease. ill post more info when its ready, have fun
I was serious when I said I am never going to believe you. Your specs show a 120GB HD and then you tell us you took out hundreds of gigs from one folder on that disk.
Do you understand how important WinSxS is and that you should not touch it? This quote from a valued expert, an MVP:
(http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-749670cec8c3/)WinSxS contains multiple versions of many files so that a program can use whatever version that it was created for, without bothering other installed software programs on the system.
Deleting duplicates in this folder will have only one result. A complete reinstallation of the operating system and other programs.

Simply, WinSxS is one of those system folders that should left as it is.

ok there no problems yet. no need to reinstall if you have a backup now is there and if something does mess up it will be fixed within 15 minutes or so. if i said "billions" of gb's would you get it... theres only a few files/dubs you have to avoid deleting other then that its just not alot of unneeded files...
if you think that controversy wait till i start delelting files in my SysWOW64 folder, i have found that these a few files in there at are 32 bit and are already in the system32 folder
Whatever you take out of winsxs will come right back unless you delete the underlying files. And Kari is right, if you mess with it, you are looking for trouble. What is that "nifty program" you used.
it will be called "magicsxs" still writing the code for it. the manifest was taking way to long and would have taken a day to complete, rewriting it now to speed it up
Do yourself a favor and take an image of your system before you start playing with winsxs. Then at least you do not paint yourself into a corner from where you cannot easily escape.
