Can't install windows update

Everytime I close the system, I get the message that windows is installing an update but it doesn't update and this has been going on for 2 months. It is a critical update so I can't delete it before I power down. I have updated all my drivers so don't know what to do next. I'm running windows 7 64 bit.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Try downloading and installing the System Updates Readiness Tool (SURT).

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [August 2011] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Hello phzaard. Welcome to Sevenforums!

Do you know what update it is? Use this tutorial to uninstall the windows update that is giving you problems, if you can find it listed: Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

Do this:

Please run the following tool in AGGRESSIVE mode: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Don't run it manually, that is just a waste of time. Aggressive mode will do what we need it to.

Now run this tool: Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

Restart your computer and re-test Windows Update. If it works, do not continue.
You might try this tutorial (You may not be able to uninstall updates after you use this reset tutorial. You might want to wait this one out as someone may want to see the update logs who might offer advice on solving your problem): Windows Update - Reset

Thanks for the suggestions but neither helped. I tried to install the ViXS Systems Inc. - Streaming Media and Broadcast Devices - ViXS PureTV-U 48B0 (NTSC/ATSC Combo) as it is noted as a critical install and I cannot uncheck it since it is critical. I tried the Fix It program but that didn't help either.

Then let me ask someone else if they'd be willing to take you through a more complex routine
