It would be interesting to know if another firewall will have a problem with the Browser service. Maybe the Browser was causing some type of traffic that would trigger the firewall's response (such as shutting it down).

Try to roll back before 18th and then check event viewer.Let us know how it goes.
does the free Avast need the Windows firewall to be running?

Just installed Avast, it seems it either does not have a firewall, or it fails to report to Windows security center that it does.

Free Avast does not come with a firewall. Some of the third party firewalls are Comodo Firewall,Zone alarm etc.
I am personally using Comodo firewall.

I purchased the Avast Internet Security Suite, installed and configured it, then disabled the Windows firewall. The flood of 7036's has stopped.

The McAfee I was using required the Windows firewall. The windows firewall is the problem, but I don't understand why it only affected 1 out of my 4 pc's. I have left McAfee on the other 3 for now, but will likely change them to Avast also once I'm convinced its as good as the members here, and the reviews claim.

thanks to all for your help !!!!

Generally McAfee creates more problems than solutions and there have been many cases where removal of McAfee has resulted in better performance.Did you completely remove McAfee using the McAfee uninstallation tool available on McAfee site??
