Well the graphics card would start at 4 gig and move downward. So it should look like this:
|---------------------- 3 Gig Ram ----------------------| 1 Gig empty |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|------------------ Windows/programs -------| 1279 Video Ram |
So really you should be losing just 300 meg of your 3 gig for the video card and a little more for other hardware. Leaving a total of 2600MB for windows or so I would guess.
With windows x64 and a compatible motherboard it would look more like this:
|---------------------- 3 Gig Ram ----------------------|---------------------------- 61 Gig empty --------------------------|
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|------------------ Windows/programs --------------|................................................| 1279 Video Ram |
Leaving your full 3 gig usable and allowing space for you to upgrade to 4, 8, 12, 16 or ???
