How to remove black screen at startup in win7 home prem

I recently installed a retail upgrade version of Win 7 HP on my desktop which had previously been run on Win XP SP3. The installation went fine and the computer works fine now with the new OS, however, during startup I get a black screen which asks me to select one of three options
a.a prior operating system
b.recovery console
c.Win 7
The win 7 option is highlighted so if i do nothing the pc proceeds to open with Win 7 and finishes booting up with no boot up or performance problem.

Can anyone tell me how to remove this black screen and the two non Win 7 options. It isnt a major problem but is an annoyance and I know it isnt "normal"

Thanks for your help!

You can edit the boot menu manually via bcdedit, or you can use a tool like EasyBCD:

What happens if you select the "prior operating system" option? Usually you only get that menu if you are dual booting between two operating systems.

When i select prior operating system i get a black screen with message....NTLDR is missing. I can then revert to the original black screen and select win 7 and it proceeds to normal startup .

Remove the Prior OS entry since it doesn't work.
Set Windows 7 as the Default to boot and set the time to 3 seconds.
That way you have access to the Recovery Console if you ever need it but it doesn't adversely affect your boot up time.

OK, I've seen that happen if the Windows XP "Recovery Console" was installed as a boot option. Just follow Ztruker's advice and you should be all set. I just wanted to make sure you didn't accidentally setup a dual boot with XP.
