    Have you downloaded any codecs ?
    This can always affect performance of your playback content.
    DId you make any changes inside Catalyst Control Center (AMD/ATI CCC)

    Though admittedly you may want to have a look at chris1neji's sugestion first.
    Though I believe that is somewhat negated by the issue appearing in vlc , which doesn't use the system codecs.
