Use Microsoft Security Essentials.
If you're prone to infection add the real-time paid protection for Malwarebytes which is still the best free on-demand scanner out there.
Thes ratings are disregarded by those in the know because they are influenced by sponsors. The one on CNET actually had a huge Norton ad right next to it.
There is so much money earned by the hideously-bad preinstalled AV's that they can buy almost anything, tying up even MS in huge anti-trust suits to try to keep them from protecting their own OS (upon which the company's survival depends) by building the AV in. So we may see Defender "morph" in Win8.
About those two most preinstalled AV's on today's consumer PC's: They are so bloated and cause so many problems we deal with here every day that they require special removal tools exactly like the worst viruses. And they let a lot slip by.
What you want to do is talk with the people who have been with the OS since before its birth and have the experience to know what works both performance- and protection-wise. That would be us.
good point, still, id like to see a larger statistic, i really like the idea of having some thing that does all of the above, scan, quick scand, select disk scan, thumb drive testing on insertion, etc... all in one program, i like one program so when there is a program im not scrambiling to another to take care of it, the last thing i need are MORE processes open. i already have 90-110 open on average in task manager
MSE will cover everything unless you discover you have a particular pattern of infection which requires a tailored solution.
Run Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware scans periodically to double check.
If you want to increase the coverage install paid real-time MB protection.
Keep a baseline Win7 backup image to use in place of reinstall just in case. Keep your data backed up as recently as is required, even synching the data if required.
