Thanks very much. Too late! After trying to restore and finding everything gone (!) including Program Files, all programs (!) I'm now trying to restore from an image made at the beginning of the month. Even the system restore didn't work inside windows so I used F8 to get to the restore from there and it seems to be working, recognizing the external drive where I backed up... this will be so much better than the two system restores to factory settings I had to do this year... I hope!!!

I'm going to bookmark your linked page though and come back and read it when I have time.

This is a bug in Microsoft's own settings - it seems that you can corrupt the Task Scheduler store simply by using the settings in the Disk Defragmenter UI.

This should get fixed by Microsoft.

Thanks Teerex. I'm afraid it got worse and I had to restore again though this time from a system image and that was better.... I'm just accepting the default defrag and backup (I actually had the problem in the backup command which was in two conflicting schedules: Task Management and the backup and restore's own scheduler.

The bug is triggered by changing the schedule to monthly and then disabling it. It's weird but it exists.

It can be simply fixed by reenabling the task and setting it to weekly.
