This may or may not work for you, but it's worth a try.

1. Open cmd and run as administrator
2 Type in "chkdsk/f" and hit enter
3. Wait until it says "c:\windows\system32" again then type in "shutdown/r" and hit enter.
This will reboot your computer and hopefully the problem will be fixed!

It wants me to reboot to do the chkdsk. I have already run chkdsk twice at boot.

I've read that this problem occurs sometimes when an upgrade is done.
Did you upgrade your version of Windows?

I used Windows anytime upgrade to upgrade from Windwos 7 Home premium to Windows 7 Professional. I am reinstalling windows 7 right now. I used the diskpart clean all command and everything is working right now. Diskpart said it succeded in cleaning the disk.

Something must be working as the drives show 0% fragmentation.

Defrag (heavy) external hard drive or re-format
Hi, I carry out a regular defrag of my C drive and external hard drive regularly about once a month. The C drive is only ever around 5% fragmented but the EHD is around 30% each time. Would I be better to delete the back-ups I have, re-format the EHD and then start with new back-ups again ? ...

I do all my backups, files backup and Image backup in an external hard drive. Once a month, I would do a disk defrag on my C drive, using Auslogics. It has been in my mind, should I defrag the ext. hard drive ? I keep the C drive lean. All files are " moved to " my external hard drive....
