CPU Usage abnormally high, sometimes peaks to 100% for no reason.

So this morning everything was fine, my CPU usage was at its normal 20% or so, occasionally up to 40 if I was playing games or something.

After coming home this evening however, turning it on again was taking much longer than usual. It took about 15-20 minutes to get to the desktop, and another 5 to load the icons properly (probably because I have Skype set to run automatically on startup).

When it finally worked with enough speed for me to actually do anything I checked my task managers performance screen, and it was up around the 90% area, and then hit 100% and I experienced the same immense slowness with everything.

I do get periods where my laptop is usable, but even then my CPU usage varies wildly between 30% and 80%, with the only stability coming aroudn 50-60% mark.

I am currently running an anti virus scan (I use ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5) which is almost complete, but I doubt that it will help - has anyone got any clue how to fix this?

My laptop is a HP Probook, model number P4510sVP7570Q5X320NIBNCN32Wa. I run Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, roughly 2.26 GHz.

What process is using the 90% CPU in Task Manager?

None of them, the largest one is my web browser at 300,000-400,000K.

Thats why I said no reason lol - its not any program I'm running, the CPU usage just spikes massively without anything being done.

Anti Virus scan complete, cleaned a few things here and there but hasn't solved the problem.

Download and install malwarebytes:Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Download.com
Once installed and updated, run a full scan and see if that helps. If it comes up with anything, remove it.

That's your memory usage. What about the CPU?

Right now it seems to have got better for a bit, but I don't hold out hope that it is a permanent recovery - I will check that next time it happens and post.

Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)
This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted. 1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues. 2. I reformatted and...

High CPU and Memory usage, Without a reason
Hi all Weird and annoying problem started for me yesterday, the CPU is always at 30-35% load, won't go lower than that, while nothing is running, even after I restart the PC it's still the same. Memory is at 2 GB usage more or less all the time (out of 8), and sometimes I get picks where it uses...

Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!
Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this! I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine....

CPU usage keeps shooting up to 100% for no reason?
My PC has the habit of randomly and suddenly using up CPU to 100% for no apparent reason. My computer slows down to a crawl and I can't even shut down as it stays on the "shutting down..." screen. There's no rhyme or reason to it, though it never happens if I don't have the pc on for at least an...
