hxl7: You might try two things. First restore folder permissions to their defaults. I'm not sure how to do that, but if you search Sevenforums, you'll probably find a way.

Second, and you may have tried this, is there a restore point you could use to set things rights?

sibbil:
thank you ... unfortunately, I got the same result in safe mode.

gogreen:
thanks very much ... I do know how to restore permissions, but I do not know the names of the folders in question indicated by the Troubleshooter:
"Problems found
Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories Not fixed"
Can anyone tell me the names of the "Windows Search directories" ?

unfortunately, the last restore point I had available did not resolve the issue.
Thanks.

If you bring up Indexing Options, can you see a list of folders? Those are the folders you need to own and give yourself permission to access.

No. Unfortunately, all I see is "indexing is not running" at the top and the area under "Index these locations" is blank.
Thank you.

If you go to Services do you find that Windows Search Service is running?

No, it is not running. That actually was the original question/problem of this thread. I am not able to start the service. Thank you.

I didn't realize that you actually went into services. I thought you were just trying to start via the other dialogs that may have appeared.

And now I just reread your third post about denied access. Was the service set to Automatic (Delayed start)?

sibbil,
I tried starting the service when set to Automatic (Delayed Start) as well as Automatic. Both produced the same failure to start the service.
thanks so much.

Is there a way to reset Windows 7 permissions to their default settings? I'd search the forum for this, but I can't at the moment. See what you can find.

Try disabling, rebooting, enabling the Windows search feature in Programs and Features in Control Panel (select Turn Windows features on or off on left hand side).

Windows Explorer 'Sort By'
I set a folder to sort the files within it in date order, but it appears to have also applied this sorting method to the other folders within the root directory (it is a folder within the pictures library). Is there anyway to set it so that only the one folder has it's files sorted by date? ...

Explorer Slow to sort folders/files.
Why is there a huge delay on the sorting of files/folders in windows explorer? If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in...

Sort is stupid slow
I have a fairly large data folder - 2000+ files and 620MB. Computer does never seems to get finished loading it. If I change the sort order to e.g. Date, it starts all over again. We're talking 15-20 mins here. Yes, it is set to be indexed. What. the. heck?

Windows explorer is being slow.
Well, long story short, my windows explorer feels way to slow, when browsing folders. Usually takes 5-7 sec to open a folder, even if it's empty inside. The issues happens on all my 3 hard disks, of which 2 are indexed. Running windows 7 64bit professional, with i5 CPU and 4gb dual channel RAM....
