How to hide / silence auto Java updates?

I've scoured the intertubes for an answer but surprisingly couldn't find one.

I have Java installed (I need it because I use OpenOffice). Some people are annoyed with Java's auto updates and want to disable them. I have a different problem: I want Java to automatically download and install updates. But I want it to SHUT UP about it and not bother me. I don't need it to pop up and tell me that there's an update available, I don't need to click "Ok" and "Next" etc. In the words of Nike, just do it! I've looked through all the Java update settings and there is no option to automatically update silently in the background without bothering me.

Does anyone know how to configure Java to automatically and silently update itself in the background without bothering me? The way all my other pieces of software do? It doesn't seem like it should be that difficult. Thank you in advance for your help, it is much appreciated.

(This text is unnecessary to read in regards to the above question, but I just have to vent some frustration) <Begin Rant> I can't tell you how much it grinds my gears that every piece of software on my machine (or rather, the programmers who created them), think that they are the only software or the most important software on my computer, and that whenever an update is needed, it's the most important thing in the world and must pop up in front of everything else immediately because as we all know, I'm constantly thinking about what version of Java or Adobe Reader or Software XYZ I have, all day every day, I even stay up at night worrying: "Do I have the latest version of Java or Adobe Reader or XYZ? If only the software would interrupt me in the middle of whatever I'm doing and tell me that an update is available and require me to go through a multi-click install & wait process, that would make me feel so much better, because it's not like I have anything else going on with my computer or my life."</Sarcasm> Hey Sun Java (and others), guess what? You're not the center of my universe. Try to remember that you're just one of many pieces of software on my computer, all of which seem to be able to update themselves without blurting the trumpets, issuing formal press statements, and requiring me to fill out a home lone application in triplicate.</Rant>

Anyway, I again thank you in advance for any help.

P.S. Just in case anyone suggests not to use Adobe Reader, I don't. :) I only mentioned it because I was using it as an example.

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

I've never heard or read where Java will update itself.

I check these sites out each day for manual updates.

I'd rather do updates myself and un-check automatic updating of anything.

I don't have an answer for you, but I always want to know what is trying to update and who is downloading what to my PC. Java and Adobe products often exploited by crap writers and they can download, well, crap, if you're not vigilant and have a good security suite installed.
Go ahead and click Next, OK, etc.

Since Java is untameable, perhaps a switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice, which does not require Java, would remove Java from the equation.

Some parts of LibreOffice do require Java in order to function, especially the BASE component.

Java can be set to notify only before install, but not to notify at all. I believe the Secunia PSI 3.0 V2 Beta will do it, but it will also update all the other programs it manages. And there may be a system tray popup, which would just be another notification. I don't know if that can be disabled as I like control over what updates on my system. that means Java too

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. I just wanted to clarify something. I am an IT professional. I am fully aware of what every single piece of software is doing on my machine. I'm not an inexperienced user who blindly clicks "next", "ok", etc... On my personal machine, which is what I'm dealing with here, any programs that I have given the go ahead to auto-update without bothering me I have fully customized and vetted. In other words, I don't do this without caution. So thank you for your concern, but I'm already on your side regarding that.

That being said, Java is the ONLY piece of software that I can't get to silently auto-update. My machine is perfectly configured to my exact specifications with the exception of this Java thing. Again, I would just ditch Java but I use OpenOffice and I'm loathe to go back to MS Office, but if I can't find any solution to this damn Java update notification, I may consider backsliding to my "ex-girlfriend", MS Office. That is a last resort.

@A Guy, what exactly is PSI 3.0 Beta Launch?

Go to start and type java and hit enter. Go to the top and click on the update tab. Then uncheck the checkbox that says "Check for Updates automatically."

Although this does not solve my problem (since I still wanted it to auto-update) because I'll have to manually make sure I'm updated, thank you for pointing out this option. It's probably the easiest option since there is no solution, and so I am going to do this. Thank you! :)

I appreciate everyone's help and I have nothing further for this thread, but I think that leaving it "unresolved" may benefit others in the future in case they are searching for this topic or in case something changes with future software updates. Again thanks to everyone for your input.

Well shoot, we could have said turn off auto updates, but that isn't a fix Secunia PSI is a program that will tell you if you have insecure or older versions of programs. It has had an auto update feature for a while, but in the latest release, it is a set and forget type program. Since you are up on things, it likely wouldn't suit you either. I update most programs manually, since I am aware when updates, or security fixes become available. I have Java set to never update, and I update when necessary. A Guy
