You can use OPTION THREE of SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and replace the files manually using the tip within that OPTION. After doing so, restart your computer and run SFC /SCANNOW again to see if it still says there are errors it could not fix. If it still says there are errors, then you are left with the repair install again.

I usually recommend the repair install first because manually replacing the files has only worked in about 20% of these cases when I have asked users to resolve the errors themselves.

A repair install will not delete your files. It will leave all of your personal files intact. If you installed Windows 7 from an RTM disc(prior to Service Pack 1) you will have to uninstall the SP1 update to do the repair install.

What James says is also true. The repair install usually goes off without a hitch and the data is left intact.

However, I would still recommend backing up important data first in case a crash occurs during the repair install. I always recommend a backup before a repair install, but especially when the system is unstable as in this case.

Yes, you should backup, and if you have nothing to back up to, you can create a partition on your HDD to save your files to.
